Urgent! This is true!

I am embarrassingly fascinated by these things- how they spread, who passes them on, how long they survive, what tactics they employ to compel a person.

Via messenger in the present, February 12, 2018:

In the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham asked the Lord to spare the city if he could find 50 righteous people. God responded to Abraham's plea "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all ....Genesis 18:16-33The movie "Corpus Christi "is due to be released this June to August. It is a disgusting film set to appear in America later this year which depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals! As a play, this has already been in theaters for a while. It's called "Corpus Christi" which means "The Body of Christ". It's a revolting mockery of our Lord. But we Christians can make a difference. That's why I am sending this e-mail to you. If you do send this around, we just might be able to prevent this film from being shown in Australia, Canada and America etc. Let's stand for what we believe and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior. Where do we stand as Christians? I am forwarding this to all I think will respect and appreciate being informed. Please help us prevent such offenses against our Lord. There is no petition to sign, no time limit, or minimum number of people to send this to.It will take you less than 2 minutes! If you are not interested and do not have the 2 minutes it will take to do this, please don't complain if God does not seem to have time for you. Imagine what would happen if this film were depicting Mohammad in the same way...the Islamic world would be in flames!!. Apparently, some regions in Europe have already successfully banned the film. All we need is a lot of prayer and a lot of E-mails.JUST GET THE WORD OUT!....Will God be able to find at least 50 righteous people who are willing to express their concern and voice their opinion against this act of blasphemy?

It is true... so please forward to everyone you know

My usual source will give you the history. Conservatives tend not to like this site. OOh- has Snopes rated that - Conservatives don't believe Snopes' research? I should look that up- but for now:

https://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/gayjesus.asp

Just on the surface, it's pretty funny. Or you could call them red flags. I love how there was no studio executive's address, no concrete film information or times, no state officials to address complaints to, no specific information really, just an exhortation to get angry or offended and email your friends. The premise is wonky, too- it seems like an odd position to take given that Christians are to show Jesus' attributes to others through actions, not by banning everything and trying to control their perception or trying to protect Jesus' reputation. Does he need that?

Also great is that it says "this is true" which you don't really say unless you know for a fact it's spurious to begin with. Another highlight is how they just moved it from the 90s email to messenger without updating the wording. I'm a little disappointed it didn't promise a wish for each person I forwarded it to - or predict my doom if I fail to act within 10 minutes of receiving it.

Before Googling the thing to see what was what, I started to think of the nature of the hypocritical request and Christianity and wrote this:

Seems like people should be more interested in giving and being kind and campaigning for peace instead of war- all the good things the Bible teaches in order to spread Christianity.. . Banning films and books (among other things, like abortion, alcohol and divorce) is both ineffective and impossible and doesn't teach people any of the good things you want people to know about Christ like peace or love or kindness towards your neighbor. I would think the Bible approach (rather than this urgent message to help ban a film) would be who cares what they think of you, you just live the Bible and the truth will prevail if he wills it. And if the truth doesn't prevail, you ran your race (2 Tim 4:7), turned the other cheek (Matt 5:38-40) and you'll be justified in the end with you eternal reward. The Bible, as I understand it, doesn't teach that you are to control everyone else's actions to be found faithful.

Also, this Christian tendency for knee jerk bans that appear to be a litmus test of faith reminds me of some Muslims trying to ban disrespect of Mohammed (there was a cartoon in Denmark?) or a dictator banning disrespect of himself. Book and film bans are impossible to police and an abysmally ineffective evangelism tool since bans usually give free people a goal or mission to unify around and fight for. If Christians start living the peace and love in the Bible, the Quakers do a pretty good job on that front, that would go farther in demonstrating the respect one needs to have for Jesus than just banning things and demanding respect be given arbitrarily.

"unexpected sad trip"

A recent scam...
This one actually grabbed me for a minute because I knew a family member was on a cruise, but I quickly regained my senses.....

**************
I'm writing this with tears in my eyes,my family and I came down here to  Philippines for a short vacation and unfortunately we got mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed, all cash, credit card and cell were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.

We've been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves in few hours from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills,

I'm freaked out at the moment and i need your help.

*****************

Things that didn't add up...
  • Hello is used, not a more casual greeting, and there is no use of family names of any kind.
  • Grammatical errors- could be attributed to being freaked out, but the quantity and types raise a red flag.
  • The username is that of a family member, but the provider after "@" was not the right one.
  • The IP address, 41.58.56.13, points to (sent from) Nigeria.
  • Another oddity being the sending of a distress email, when you could call from the embassy or hotel any number of people, one of which would probably be home so that you wouldn't have to send an email...

 My response:

I have to say this first- I'm not mad at the forwarder at all-- just the creators of the forward and hysteria. I should probably leave this alone or delete it or whatever, but I won't....

I don't know if you looked at this before forwarding... but I have to chime in. I don't mean any offense, but knowing some Arabs and Muslims as I do, I have to say this stamp is nothing to worry about. Please forgive me if I seem a little peeved. I'll add my piece (since you've given me yours) and then I'll be fine.

First, Obama didn't actually tell the post office to issue this stamp. This is another attempt at trying to get people to believe Obama's a "closet Muslim" and lying about being Christian. See snopes: http://www.snopes.com/politics/stamps/eidstamp.asp

Second, it seems like a pretty crazy, big leap, don't you think? It's Arabic, so don't support it? I have a New Testament in Arabic. This is a pretty broad generalization- don't buy it 'cause of the Arabic. Things like this foster hatred of the unknown and "the other." It tries to tell you- you don't have anything in common with people who speak Arabic- don't bother to translate the script- let's judge them wholesale on their language (or color of their skin...didn't we get over that? No to that too, huh?)- and oppose and boycott whatever they "support".

The tone of this thing is pretty vicious also. "Remember the Muslim bombings," with Muslim in all caps. And if you didn't get the message, the last line implores you to remember all the American lives lost in vicious Muslim attacks. The email doesn't mention that our good friend Israel had some very important knowledge about the Marine barracks incident, but didn't share it due to the nature of the give and take relationship- we give and they take.

From the forward: "To Use this stamp would be a slap in the face to  All those AMERICANS who died at the hands of Those whom this stamp Honors."(??!!) MANY nationalities died on 9/11 (is that what they're talking about?), MANY members of MANY religious groups- they were all Americans (or maybe on visas, but you get my point). This line aims to divide Americans. This forward is a slap in the face to Americans. I'd rather boycott emails like this (but I think commenting might do more good- or at least I won't be silently complicit). Muslims serve in our armed forces and Muslims died on 9/11, alongside white, black, German, Swedish, Hispanic, Jewish, Italian, etc Americans. This makes it sound as if this stamp honors terrorists (?!)-- and Arab Americans or Muslim Americans either do not exist or cannot possibly function in a democracy or not be a terrorist in general.

On a practical note, I seriously doubt you would be offered this stamp first or as the only option at a post office anyway. When you go to the counter and ask to buy stamps, they normally just hand out the flag or bell forever stamps- or whatever is on them. If you don't want the Eid stamp on your letters, we do have the option to pick something else. At my small local post office, we usually have 5 or 6 choices and online you have ~100. And in the little vending machines, I have only seen the bell and flag type. I seriously doubt post offices will force this particular stamp on you or require you to have it on your letters.  :)  My question is--will they use this stamp to "track" Muslims? I'm joking (I think).

I take major issue with using this stamp being unpatriotic (and having all those American flags at the bottom of such a hateful message). That's ridiculous! We believe in freedom of religion, do we not? And God doesn't force Christians to obey; that is our choice (there are definitely consequences for the wrong choice... but my point is we aren't forced, we choose). This is a right as enshrined in law as our right to assemble and demonstrate, to speak our mind, to bear arms.

Sure, don't buy the stamp if you don't want it, but to pressure (or harass) others not to buy it or the post office not to sell it because you don't celebrate the holiday represented on the stamp goes against what America is all about- or should be. Our soldiers died to protect THAT right.

Where's the outrage about Hanukkah (or anything else that has appeared on a stamp that's not Christian)?? I'm sure there's a stamp for that and Christians don't celebrate that either. To be fair we should be making a scene at post offices about that, too. Otherwise, this is just about people thinking all Muslims are terrorists. I don't think that is too big of a leap. I thought we were beyond ignorance like that!

Moving on to more facts... This stamp is for the celebration or Ramadan or the Eid feast, not anything remotely associated with terrorism or any particular country. It is not unpatriotic. Ramadan emphasizes some points Christians and Americans would do well to consider, actually- what it means to be hungry, fasting, prayer, devotion, being kind, not arguing, refraining from foul speech, etc. Is this really something to get upset about or make a scene about (going in and shouting, unprovoked- "I do not want that Muslim stamp on any of my mail")? I guess you certainly have that right, but especially if you are a Christian, you should think about your motivation for doing that, how you might accomplish the same in a more self-controlled, respectful manner, and what others are going to learn from that- a Biblical concept or something opposite.

If you take issue with this as a Christian, I can maybe see that. Maybe. It's a Muslim holiday. Christians don't celebrate it. But- no need to hate it and hate Arabic and stage boycotts and and go into post offices demanding stamps with some "American" writing on it. The solution would be simply not to buy it, not to "adamantly and vocally boycott" and make a big deal about it. It's not applicable to you. Must everything be? Like the Hanukkah one. So what? We have the freedom not to buy it. Choose the flowers. Or flag. Or Elvis. Chinese New Year*. Latin Music Legends. Whatever floats your boat.
*Do be advised that the Chinese New Year one does have Chinese characters on it ;)

It's pretty American to have over 100 choices of what to mail your letters with. It's a letter for crying out loud! If there was only one design, I'd definitely think we were moving towards socialism. ;)

Edits:
-->I was so caught off guard by this one for whatever reason, I didn't mention that whether they're talking about 9/11 or Iraq (Americans dying), my points are basically the same except for the fact that I don't believe soldiers in Iraq are fighting for freedom or that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. This may be clear to most, but this particular post may not have been clear.

-->I also didn't mention the differences between Islam and what terrorists practice (those who claim to kill in the name of Islam). For the most part, terrorism is political. People have a problem with foreign occupation and oppression (go figure). I think it helps them (justification, recruiting) to bring religion into it, but I certainly wouldn't inform myself on Islam from watching or listening to a terrorist who claims to kill in the name of God (in any religion).

** I didn't go into these probably because the main problem was more broad. It's definitely not that I think these issues aren't important. When I looked back at this, I felt I should have addressed them, though.

Agree or Delete

Not the most American concept, but how many times have you seen it (it was especially funny on the Obama is a dictator one)? But we've heard it before. If you disagree with the Iraq invasion (or don't love the job Bush did or fill in the blank), you can pack up and move elsewhere.

You see this in your inbox a few hundred times a year. Maybe you've even sent one in your lifetime. They are a challenge in more ways than one, at least for me.

I think it is a little much to ask and maybe unfair- agree or delete. You get to give me a (second hand) dissertation on some political topic or problem with our society and I have to delete it if I don't like it or don't agree? I agree that this is probably wise, since me saying anything, as enlightening as it may be, is just going to get under your skin and cause a problem between us (supposedly I know you and this matters if I am on your mailing list). This may be going out on a limb, but you should care what I think if I am on your mailing list; I care what you think. I may not agree, but I care.

You did send it right to my inbox, so some thought does go into that- or it should. I don't think you should email something to someone you wouldn't say to their face. If we said agree or shut up a the end of any talk or comments we gave in real life, I suspect we'd have an epidemic of broken noses or worse in the country. :) I don't think I'd ever have the guts to say it to anyone- not just because I don't believe in the concept.

The fact that it comes to my inbox from someone I see in the real world is to me like you sent me a personal note or did say it to my face. I probably shouldn't take a mass email that way, but that's the measure by which I send or forward email, so I expect others to think the way I do. I know I shouldn't. That's bad form on my part, a generalization.

Maybe if "agree or delete" didn't appear, I wouldn't feel so compelled to reply... No, if it's an urban legend or just so wrong I'm probably going to want to reply to set the record straight. I should reply, after all. It was addressed to me. Isn't silence complicity or agreement? Isn't that the point of agree or delete? To eliminate opposition and lay claim on" right" even in the face of the facts?

Every time I get one, I struggle between the wisdom of deleting and the meaning behind deleting it. Maybe I can reply, but keep it short and as free of snark as I can. Maybe that's not wise, either. But is having people going around thinking you agree with all of this nonsense floating in cyberspace wise? It borders on a lie. That's not who I am.

Or perhaps this is more of an email ettiquette problem- saying (aggressive) things online that you wouldn't say in person, etc- rather than one of silencing dissent or lack of civility in our culture or whatever else...

I give up for now. Problem not solved.

What Would Jesus Forward?

Also called "No Forwards, Just Lattes."

More on the Obama Hitler forward. Get the scissors and forceps. Time to dissect. Obviously, my comments are in another color. I think it will be orange, unless this thing has a mind of its own again.

*** *** ***
I am a student of history. (You know this is true because I mention Hitler later... ;) ) Professionally, I have written 15 books on history that have been published in six languages, and I have studied history all my life. I have come to think there is something monumentally large afoot, and I do not believe it is simply a banking crisis, or a mortgage crisis, or a credit crisis. Yes these exist, but they are merely single facets on a very large gemstone that is only now coming into a sharper focus..

Something of historic proportions is happening. I can sense it because I know how it feels, smells, what it looks like, and how people react to it. Yes, a perfect storm may be brewing, but there is something happening within our country that has been evolving for about ten to fifteen years. The pace has dramatically quickened in the past two.

(Curious thing this "something afoot". It has been brewing for 10-15 years. Indeed, the author later tells us everything has been getting worse for decades even. But of course it is Obama's fault- alas- it has quickened in the last 2 years. And not quickened a little. Dramatically!)

We demand and then codify into law the requirement that our banks make massive loans to people we know they can never pay back? Why?

We learned just days ago that the Federal Reserve, which has little or no real oversight by anyone, has "loaned" two trillion dollars (that is $2,000,000,000,000) over the past few months, but will not tell us to whom or why or disclose the terms. That is our money. Yours and mine. And that is three times the $700 billion we all argued about so strenuously just this past September. Who has this money? Why do they have it? Why are the terms unavailable to us? Who asked for it? Who authorized it? I thought this was a government of "we the people," who loaned our powers to our elected leaders. Apparently not.

(I'm glad something was done. I am not among those who say the market would have ironed itself out in time had we done the correct thing, which is nothing. The markets are perfect and capitalism is our religion. I disagree. De-regulation wasn't the answer.)

We have spent two or more decades intentionally de-industrializing our economy... Why?
We have intentionally dumbed down our schools, ignored our history, and no longer teach our founding documents, why we are exceptional, and why we are worth preserving. Students by and large cannot write, think critically, read, or articulate. Parents are not revolting, teachers are not picketing, school boards continue to back mediocrity. Why?

(Why are you blaming Obama?)

We have now established the precedent of protesting every close election (violently in California over a proposition that is so controversial that it simply wants marriage to remain defined as between one man and one woman. Did you ever think such a thing possible just a decade ago?) (Protesting every close election isn't Obama's fault; that strategically placed gay marriage bit will strike the intended target, though) We have corrupted our sacred political process by allowing unelected judges to write laws that radically change our way of life, (Didn't that happen with Bush?? Or any President? And as for gay marriage, how does that change my life??) and then mainstream Marxist (??? Honestly!) groups like ACORN and others to turn our voting system into a banana republic (Helping people register to vote. Banana republic. Not following.). To what purpose?

Now our mortgage industry is collapsing, housing prices are in free fall, major industries are failing, our banking system is on the verge of collapse, social security is nearly bankrupt, as is Medicare and our entire government. Our education system is worse than a joke (I teach college and I know precisely what I am talking about) - the list is staggering in its length, breadth, and depth.. It is potentially 1929 x ten... (This stuff- not Obama's fault. Sorry. He inherited quite a mess, yes. And you expect to fix it with tax cuts?) And we are at war with an enemy we cannot even name for fear of offending people of the same religion, who, in turn, cannot wait to slit the throats of your children if they have the opportunity to do so. (Now this is outrageous. Maybe it's just bad grammar. It looks like they are saying the people with the same religion as the terrorists will slit your throat. That is a(n) big, fat offensive lie. It's not even the offense or political correctness that conservatives love to hate that is the issue, though. It's the spreading of lies and half truths and ignorance- which fuel hate- about other human beings. What does the Bible have to say about that? After making generalizations and assumptions based on stereotypes, do you then expect them to be so impressed by your Christian attitude that they convert immediately?)

And finally, we have elected a man that no one really knows anything about, who has never run so much as a Dairy Queen, let alone a town as big as Wasilla , Alaska .. (Again with the Obama Palin comaprison! The election's over. Palin will never be in the running again. McCain would be the one you would compare Obama with. Or Bush. Whoever. No one knows anything about Obama? After that election, we know quite a bit. He wrote two books, there might be something in there. Did I miss something, was McCain mayor of something? Oh, that's right. That's why they used Palin's "experience". As I recall, McCain never ran any Dairy Queens either. Not that that has anything to do with the Presidency. My local Dairy Queen sells (sold) moldy bread. Don't want them to be President!) All of his associations and alliances are with real radicals in their chosen fields of employment (I think you can find my posts on these so-called radicals and associations. Most are quite a stretch.), and everything we learn about him, drip by drip, is unsettling if not downright scary (Surely you have heard him speak about his idea to create and fund a mandatory civilian defense force stronger than our military for use inside our borders? (I heard him speak of mandatory service like Peace Corps, community service, etc. I think that is a brilliant idea. I don't think it was ever implied that it would replace the military like this seems to...) No? Oh, of course. The media would never play that for you over and over and then demand he answer it. (Jeremiah Wright anyone? Among others.) Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter and $150,000 wardrobe are more important.) (Irresponsibility and contradictions are kind of relevant. I believe Palin used her daughter quite a bit, too- remember the 'we've got morals because she didn't get an abortion.' The media didn't do all the damage. Palin herself helped.)

Mr. Obama's winning platform can be boiled down to one word: Change. Why?
(It was good. McCain wished he'd thought of it and tried to steal it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/sep/05/uselections2008.johnmccain2 Obama is a welcome change from Bush. I don't like it when Presidents look for reasons to go to war and when they don't find one, they go anyway. I happen to think that's wrong. )

I have never been so afraid for my country and for my children as I am now.
(Again, that was Bush. Making enemies right and left. Ditching diplomacy and allies.)

This man campaigned on bringing people together, something he has never, ever done in his professional life. (???) In my assessment, Obama will divide us along philosophical lines, push us apart, and then try to realign the pieces into a new and different power structure. Change is indeed coming. And when it comes, you will never see the same nation again. (Same old, same old. We hear this from the opposing side every election. Bush actually did this quite well. We turned from diplomacy and made enemies where we need not have. That's not the same nation. From Powell doctrine to Bush doctrine. From having the world behind us after 9/11 to acting alone in Iraq. From moral authority to embracing torture. From defense to preemptive strike.)

And that is only the beginning..

As a serious student of history, I thought I would never come to experience what the ordinary, moral German must have felt (Love how this goes from election rumors to moral Germans are American conservative Christians today and Obama is Hitler. (???) Is Obama gassing Jews? What??? REALLY PEOPLE!) in the mid-1930s In those times, the "savior" (A nod to the conservative accusation that liberals think Obama is Jesus. Also ridiculous. Light years better than Bush, absolutely. Obama as Jesus is as crazy as Obama as Hitler, honestly. Obama is a man- fallible, yes; dictator, no.) was a former smooth-talking rabble-rouser from the streets (Is Obama from the streets? I didn't think so. And if he were, would that make him a bloodthirsty dictator? Obama a rabble-rouser? Bush was the party animal. Still doesn't make them dictators.), about whom the average German knew next to nothing. What they should have known was that he was associated with groups that shouted, shoved, and pushed around people with whom they disagreed (Which groups like this is Obama associated? I got nothing. But take a look at how the Bush admin dealt with opposition- see manual.); he edged his way onto the political stage through great oratory. (Ooooh. That's Obama, for sure! He is Hitler reincarnated! All politicians have an "in" like this. Maybe they are a great speaker. Maybe they are folksy. They know what the public wants and they make us think they can deliver. It's the nature of politics, not
necessarily just dictatorship.) Conservative "losers" read it right now. (And you thought this Hitler piece in red letters had nothing to do with Obama. Just a history lesson from a student of history.)

And there were the promises. Economic times were tough (oooh, like now), people were losing jobs, and he was a great speaker. And he smiled and frowned and waved a lot. And people, even newspapers, were afraid to speak out for fear that his "brown shirts" would bully and beat them into submission. Which they did - regularly. (Where are Obama's brown shirts? Are people being beaten? Can we not still dissent? How did this letter get out? Did you get beaten for writing it? If you're wondering why people object when you call Obama Hitler and Mao and the US a dictatorship, this isn't proof Obama's got us under his thumb and we can't say otherwise, it's because they think you're crazy to think we don't live in a democracy anymore.) And then, he was duly elected to office, while a full-throttled economic crisis bloomed at hand - the Great Depression. (Totally now. Recession. Depression. Same thing. I apologize to anyone who lived during that time for even joking about that.) Slowly, but surely he seized the controls of government power, person by person, department by department, bureaucracy by bureaucracy. The children of German citizens were at first, encouraged to join a Youth Movement in his name where they were taught exactly what to think. (Is this the fear of community service??? Sad. Sooo, if you work in soup kitchen or teach for America, you are a communist? Or maybe they are confusing Obama with the Georgian President?) Later, they were required to do so. No Jews of course, (Does Obama hate Jews?? I missed that. He's pretty nice to Israel. He said he would talk tough, but we are still funding their ethnic cleansing of Palestine, occupation, and illegal settlements. They've got a few Jews there. And Rahm Emanuel. Would Hitler have hired him? I just don't see the evidence for the Jew hating thing.)

How did he get people on his side? He did it by promising jobs to the jobless, money to the money-less, and rewards for the military-industrial complex. (This is what politicians do. As a student of history, perhaps you have studied more campaigns than 2008's? Or listened to other politicians speak, other than Obama?) He did it by indoctrinating the children, advocating gun control (Gun control! Communist for sure! Conveniently, this is a Democratic plank.), health care for all (Ooooh, that's just evil!), better wages (Who would want or promise such a thing?), better jobs (No, not better jobs!), and promising to re-instill pride once again in the country, across Europe , and across the world (Anything but that. Certainly no President of ours would say such things! All of them promise that and people want that.). He did it with a compliant media - did you know that? And he did this all in the name of justice and .... . ... change. And the people surely got what they voted for. (No, they didn't! They got murder. That's clearly not happening with Obama. He is nothing like Hitler except that they are politicians and politicians tend to promise such general things for the general welfare as the above, minus indoctrinating children.)

If you think I am exaggerating, look it up. It's all there in the history books. (I don't want to read the history book you read. Or maybe I do. It'd probably be a hoot.)

So read your history books. Many people of conscience objected in 1933 and were shouted down, called names, laughed at, and ridiculed. (Like people who opposed the Iraq invasion and occupation or like people who oppose Israel's occupation, or like people who say Islam is peaceful? It happens on both sides. It's not an Obama conspiracy. Not to mention, people calling Obama Hitler are not equivalent to people objecting to Hitler's massive extermination of Jews and others he felt were unfit.) When Winston Churchill pointed out the obvious in the late 1930s while seated in the House of Lords in England (he was not yet Prime Minister), he was booed into his seat and called a crazy troublemaker. He was right, though. And the world came to regret that he was not listened to.

Do not forget that Germany was the most educated, the most cultured country in Europe. It was full of music, art, museums, hospitals, laboratories, and universities. And yet, in less than six years (a shorter time span than just two terms of the U. S. presidency) it was rounding up its own citizens, killing others, abrogating its laws, turning children against parents, and neighbors against neighbors. (After 9/11 there was a period where I was a bit fearful for my husband because of the backlash against Arabs and people who "look Arab". In the back of my mind I thought they could be rounded up and sent to internment camps like we did to our Japanese citizens. Thankfully, it didn't happen, but with the hysteria, fear, hate, and Bush's policies I thought it wasn't crazy.) All with the best of intentions, of course. (Best intentions being killing Jews? No offense to the others who died in the Holocaust. That was just wrong.) The road to Hell is paved with them.

As a practical thinker, one not overly prone to emotional decisions (I disagree with both points given the charged language and tone in this thing. He's not hysterical, but you know which way he leans and that this is neither objective or logical like he thinks. Or historically accurate.), I have a choice: I can either believe what the objective pieces of evidence tell me (even if they make me cringe with disgust); I can believe what history is shouting to me from across the chasm of seven decades; or I can hope I am wrong by closing my eyes, having another latte, and ignoring what is transpiring around me. (You' be better off with the latte, trust me. No forwards, just lattes.)

I choose to believe the evidence. (If there was some presented, perhaps we could evaluate it. Why are people "scared"? Why do they think America is on the verge of becoming communist or that Obama is a dictator? I would still like to know. The reasons listed here can't be it. It makes no sense. Hitler and Obama are good orators, so they are both communists??? Does not compute.) No doubt some people will scoff at me, others laugh, or think I am foolish, naive, or both. To some degree, perhaps I am (Thank you! The most sane thing I've heard in this screed.). But I have never been afraid to look people in the eye and tell them exactly what I believe-and why I believe it. (Can't object to that. Not that typing is looking people in the eye, which is why I like it. Typed or face to face, I do like that quality. No beating around the bush. I still think he's crazy.)

I pray I am wrong. I do not think I am. Perhaps the only hope is our vote in the next elections.

Another Obama- Hitler email. They are still trying. Hard. And it shows.

This one seems to be called:

What if he's right

or

Something of historic proportions is happening

Love how it says to stay neutral and read with an open mind, talks about spending, then launches into an ACORN ruined our voting system, a Sarah Palin comparison and Hitler reference. They all seem to read the same way. This one also had the "if Obama's elected (or re-elected), this nation will cease to be free, cease to be the US, etc and the earth will stop spinning or collide with the sun or something.

Yes, please do read it objectively, though, that way you'll understand how truly ridiculous this actually is sooner than you normally would if you relied on the right- left divide.

Wow. My eyes hurt from rolling them so many times while reading this! Hope they won't stick like that.

It struck me as election 2008 material right away. And yet it's still circulating (I got it today) as though we've not heard and debunked more than a few of these things since Obama's candidacy rumors. Comments like this followed it in my copy: "HOPE THIS MESSAGE IS AS WRONG AS IT CAN BE BUT WHAT IF IT IS NOT!! Read James 4:17 and say a prayer for America and the entire world. Thank you. I love each of you!" What if it's not? Really??? Come on!

I'll hit you with the snopes link before the garbage this time:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/proportions.asp

Here it is (The color is from the email I got, not my addition, with the Hitler portion in red. Nice touch, dontcha think? ;) ):

I hope
you find the time to read this with an open mind. It's interesting. Please read it with the open mind rather than immediately breaking it down into left or right, but rather look at it from the neutral viewpoint of right or wrong. It's like the line below says, "what if he is right?"

Take the three minutes to read this. Maybe he is wrong, but what if he’s right?

David Kaiser is a respected historian whose published works have covered a broad range of topics, from European Warfare to American League Baseball. Born in 1947, the son of a diplomat, Kaiser spent his childhood in three capital cities: Washington D.C. , Albany , New York , and Dakar , Senegal .. He attended Harvard University , graduating there in 1969 with a B.A. in history. He then spent several years more at Harvard, gaining a PhD in history, which he obtained in 1976. He served in the Army Reserve from 1970 to 1976.

He is a professor in the Strategy and Policy Department of the United States Naval War College . He has previously taught at Carnegie Mellon, Williams College and Harvard University . Kaiser's latest book,The Road to Dallas, about the Kennedy assassination, was just published by Harvard University Press.

Dr. David Kaiser

History Unfolding

I am a student of history. Professionally, I have written 15 books on history that have been published in six languages, and I have studied history all my life.

Why?

We have now established the precedent of protesting every close election (violently in California over a proposition that is so controversial that it simply wants marriage to remain defined as between one man and one woman. Did you ever think such a thing possible just a decade ago?) We have corrupted our sacred political process by allowing unelected judges to write laws that radically change our way of life, and then mainstream Marxist groups like ACORN and others to turn our voting system into a banana republic.

It is potentially 1929 x ten...And we are at war with an enemy we cannot even name for fear of offending people of the same religion, who, in turn, cannot wait to slit the throats of your children if they have the opportunity to do so.

And finally, we have elected a man that no one really knows anything about, who has never run so much as a Dairy Queen, let alone a town as big as Wasilla , Alaska .. All of his associations and alliances are with real radicals in their chosen fields of employment, and everything we learn about him, drip by drip, is unsettling if not downright scary (Surely you have heard him speak about his idea to create and fund a mandatory civilian defense force stronger than our military for use inside our borders? No? Oh, of course. The media would never play that for you over and over and then demand he answer it. Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter and $150,000 wardrobe are more important.)

Mr. Obama's winning platform can be boiled down to one word: Change. Why?

I have never been so afraid for my country and for my children as I am now.

This man campaigned on bringing people together, something he has never, ever done in his professional life. In my assessment, Obama will divide us along philosophical lines, push us apart, and then try to realign the pieces into a new and different power structure. Change is indeed coming. And when it comes, you will never see the same nation again.

And that is only the beginning..

As a serious student of history, I thought I would never come to experience what the ordinary, moral German must have felt in the mid-1930s In those times, the "savior" was a former smooth-talking rabble-rouser from the streets, about whom the average German knew next to nothing. What they should have known was that he was associated with groups that shouted, shoved, and pushed around people with whom they disagreed; he edged his way onto the political stage through great oratory. Conservative "losers" read it right now.

And there were the promises. Economic times were tough, people were losing jobs, and he was a great speaker. And he smiled and frowned and waved a lot. And people, even newspapers, were afraid to speak out for fear that his "brown shirts" would bully and beat them into submission. Which they did - regularly. And then, he was duly elected to office, while a full-throttled economic crisis bloomed at hand - the Great Depression. Slowly, but surely he seized the controls of government power, person by person, department by department, bureaucracy by bureaucracy. The children of German citizens were at first, encouraged to join a Youth Movement in his name where they were taught exactly what to think. Later, they were required to do so. No Jews of course,

How did he get people on his side? He did it by promising jobs to the jobless, money to the money-less, and rewards for the military-industrial complex. He did it by indoctrinating the children, advocating gun control, health care for all, better wages, better jobs, and promising to re-instill pride once again in the country, across Europe , and across the world. He did it with a compliant media - did you know that? And he did this all in the name of justice and .... . ... change. And the people surely got what they voted for.

If you think I am exaggerating, look it up. It's all there in the history books.

So read your history books. Many people of conscience objected in 1933 and were shouted down, called names, laughed at, and ridiculed. When Winston Churchill pointed out the obvious in the late 1930s while seated in the House of Lords in England (he was not yet Prime Minister), he was booed into his seat and called a crazy troublemaker. He was right, though. And the world came to regret that he was not listened to.

Do not forget that Germany was the most educated, the most cultured country in Europe . It was full of music, art, museums, hospitals, laboratories, and universities. And yet, inless than six years(a shorter time span than just two terms of the U. S. presidency) it was rounding up its own citizens, killing others, abrogating its laws, turning children against parents, and neighbors against neighbors.. All with the best of intentions, of course.. The road to Hell is paved with them.

I am a candidate!

Edit 4/6/10: I received another one, slightly different- see below.

OK, not really.

Gotta love how this thing is so general. Complete with spelling errors, as all good scam letters are. I just signed up for LinkedIn, so I'm thinking this could be something floating around there.

I was selected due to "current standing, but focusing as well on criteria from executive and professional directories, associations, and trade journals."

What trade? What standing? Do they know what I do? Why would being in a directory be criteria for being a candidate, anyway?

Relief! There is no fee! This can't possibly be a scam. (sarcasm)

The catch: They need verification -click on the hyperlink. There is no way I'd click that. I mean, they have selected me as a candidate but need verification since they are working from secondary sources? If I'm a candidate, shouldn't they have talked to my boss or others in this mysterious directory that won me this esteemed status? Am I unreachable by phone to bestow such an honor? :)

By the way, the two things I link to are these, not the bad phishing one in my actual email! :)

This was the IP address 173.224.211.207 ; I didn’t get a location, but the same Psychz Networks in CA showed up with the unknown location.

They didn't use my name on this one. :( I'll try and highlight the differences from the one above. Basically, the company, sender and address, approval date and deadlines are different. The exact wording, including the fact that they are "please to inform me" are the same.

The bigoted 9/11 forwards are alive and well: 'The Budweiser (and Pepsi) Story'

What will I do when people stop making up this crazy stuff? Gotta love the "(not a joke)".

Hopefully by now people when people read things like this, a red flag goes up and they know to check the validity. I'm hoping people have more sense now and maybe have used past events as an opportunity to educate themselves on Arab culture, Arab-Americans, the Arab and or Muslim response, etc.

According to http://www.snopes.com/rumors/budweiser.asp , this is actually a joke- or a lie- your choice. All the files at the end are 9/11 remembrance badges, various representations of US flags, a cartoon soldier, a God Bless America, and of course a beer glass.

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blbudweiser.htm

http://septterror.tripod.com/emailmyths_2.html

Enjoy:

The Budweiser Story

(not a joke)

This is TRUE!

How Budweiser handled those who laughed at those

who died on the 11th of September, 2001...

Thought you might like to know what happened

in a little town north of Bakersfield , California

After you finish reading this,

please forward this story on to others

so that our nation and people around the world

will know about those who laughed

when they found out about the tragic events

in New York , Pennsylvania , and the Pentagon.

On September 11th,

A Budweiser employee was making a delivery

to a convenience store in a California town named McFarland.

He knew of the tragedy that had occurred

in New York when he entered the business

to find the two Arabs, who owned the business,

whooping and hollering to show their approval

and support of this treacherous attack.

The Budweiser employee went to his truck,

called his boss and told him

of the very upsetting event!

He didn't feel he could be in that store with those

horrible people. His boss asked him,

'Do you think you could go in there long enough

to pull every Budweiser product and item

our beverage company sells there?

We'll never deliver to them again.'

The employee walked in,

proceeded to pull every single product his

beverage company provided and left

with an incredible grin on his face.

He told them never to bother to call for a delivery again.

Budweiser happens to be the beer of choice

for that community.

Just letting you know how Kern County

handled this situation. And Now

The Rest Of The Story:

It seems that the Bud driver and the Pepsi man

are neighbors. Bud called Pepsi and told him.

Pepsi called his boss who told him to

pull all Pepsi products as well!!!

That would include Frito Lay, etc.

Furthermore, word spread and

all vendors followed suit! At last report, on June 26, 2009,
Fareed Katib closed the store and filed bankruptcy!

Good old American

Passive-Aggressive A$$ Whoopin!

Pass this along, America needs to know

that we're all working together!

If you can read this.

Thank a teacher...

If you are reading it in English....

THANK A SOLDIER!!!

comment on the FWD posts

Some people might think all or most of these forwards are pretty loony. That's good. That's progress, I guess. Sadly, when I received them around 9/11/01 through the run up to the Iraq invasion, people were forwarding these things like mad, posting them on message boards, echoing the sentiments, etc. I read these things and the reactions to them with almost as much shock as when I heard the first WTC tower had been hit.

So I apologize if I don't get out my biggest American flag and wave it a fit of patriotic fervor when I'm supposed to. A recent forward urges us to "Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you." I heard internment camps advocated a few times during the week after- no joke. I didn't really think that could happen today (didn't think it was impossible, either), but I didn't think we'd actually attack Iraq, either. Please don't let those and the ones in these emails ever guide you!

It disgusts me every time I look back to that day. I was horrified by the event, but I was almost as horrified by our response.

Fwd: Vital Information about the War on terrorism

Here are 2 forwards with very similar contents I received at key political moments. I responded to some, but not all of the totally ridiculous contents at the time. It's all old stuff.

Before reading see: http://www.snopes.com/rumors/soapbox/chong.asp

My comments are in red.

Subjects I saw for the email in the chain of forwarded messages:
Fwd: Vital Information about the War on terrorism!!!!!
Fwd: WHAT WE ALL NEED TO BE AWARE OF CONCERNING THE MUSLIM RELIGION.

And here we go for the first one:

PLEASE TAKE TIME TO READ THIS!!

For those of us with kids and grandkids this is very scary indeed.

Please take the time to read the essay by Dr. Chong. It is without a doubt the most articulate and convincing writing I have read regarding the War in Iraq. If you have any doubts please open your mind to his essay and give a fair evaluation.

I had no idea who Dr. Chong is or the source of these thoughts... so when I received them, I almost deleted them - as well-written as they are. But then I did a "Google search" on the Doctor and found him to be a retired Air Force Surgeon of all things and past Commander of Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. Yes, but did he write it? Hmmm.

*Subject: Muslims, terrorists and the USA. A different spin on Iraq war.

This WAR is for REAL!
Dr. Vernon Chong, Major General,
USAF, Retired

Tuesday, July 12, 2005 ---I know someone sent me this somewhere in 2002-2004, too.

To get out of a difficulty, one usually must go through it. Our country is now facing the most serious threat to its existence, as we know it, that we have faced in your lifetime and mine (which includes WWII).

The deadly seriousness is greatly compounded by the fact that there are very few of us who think we can possibly lose this war and even fewer who realize what losing really means. ---OK. You can't win a war on terror. It will always be there. There will always be injustice, those who fight against it, those who will stop at nothing and do the unthinkable, etc. And we're not going to totally lose it, either, unless we all fall into a wrinkle in time, an alternate universe where the US disbands the military and we cut off diplomatic ties and trade with everyone. This guy seems to think the world will end or we'll be prisoners if we were no longer the superpower. Things may not go how our leaders would like 100% of the time if we were not the superpower, but I think that might be good in a lot of cases, especially recently. Those of us in these generations could see how the other countries felt. Maybe our children would resort to terrorism for the injustice they feel and the world would be concerned about American terrorists.

First, let's examine a few basics:

1. When did the threat to us start?

Many will say September 11, 2001. The answer as far as the United State is concerned is 1979, 22 years prior to September 2001, with the following attacks on us: ---These seemed to start when US policy took a definite shift toward Israel, actually.

* Iran Embassy Hostages, 1979;
* Beirut, Lebanon Embassy 1983;
* Beirut, Lebanon Marine Barracks 1983; ---Israel knew about this one and consciously made the decision not to tell us. Some friend, huh?
* Lockerbie, Scotland Pan-Am flight to New York 1988;
* First New York World Trade Center attack 1993;
* Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Khobar Towers Military complex 1996;
* Nairobi, Kenya US Embassy 1998;
* Dares Salaam, Tanzania US Embassy 1998;
* Aden, Yemen USS Cole 2000;
* New York World Trade Center 2001;
* Pentagon 2001.

(Note that during the period from 1981 to 2001 there were 7,581 terrorist attacks worldwide). ---This was obviously put in here as a scare tactic as well, but it doesn't help his point much. If there were that many attacks and only a handful were on us, it would seem we're not in as much existential danger as he would have us believe after all.

2. Why were we attacked?

Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks happened during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2. We cannot fault either the Republicans or Democrats as there were no provocations by any of the presidents or their immediate predecessors, Presidents Ford or Carter. ---Envy?? Are they kidding? Terrorism is political. The recent attacks have had political justification. Religion is a convenient tool for recruiting. They perceive injustice and are hitting the country responsible. They hit us in our financial district and almost at our center of government; they did hit the Pentagon. And they know that when that many people die, people take notice. They no doubt achieved some of their goal-we are talking about it now, aren't we?? Envy. We wish. If that were true, we'd bear no responsibility whatsoever. We do so much around the world, supporting murderous dictators when it suits us, etc that it is not inconceivable that countries could hate us for our policies and what we did to them. There is more evidence for this (and it makes more sense) than for saying they are so envious of us that they want to kill us.

As long as people strut around and say they hate us because of our freedom or success, you are missing the point and we'll keep being hit; the target on our back gets bigger an bigger. The more we make policies favoring one nation who doesn't deserve it above others and continue to invade said others on false pretenses which somehow confounds the public, but inexplicably ends up fulfilling the top goals of the aforementioned "one nation", the more we will be attacked. When Bush unleashed his doctrine of preemption on the world, he also opened us up to more attacks. You can't have that sort of 'invade now ask questions later' policy and not invite all kinds of trouble. The policy provokes.

3. Who were the attackers?

In each case, the attacks on the US were carried out by Muslims. ---And why is that? Not because we're infidels, but because Muslim nations are tired of the way we treat them, perhaps?

4. What is the Muslim population of the World?

25%. ---He goes from talking about the US everywhere else to the world here probably because the Muslim population in the US is less than 1% and that's not nearly as impressive as a whopping 25%!

5. Isn't the Muslim Religion peaceful?

Hopefully, but that is really not material. ---You're right it's not material! Terrorism is political, not religious. There is no doubt that the predominately Christian population of Germany was peaceful, but under the dictatorial leadership of Hitler (who was also Christian), that made no difference. You either went along with the administration or you were eliminated. There were 5 to 6 million Christians killed by the Nazis for political reasons (including 7,000 Polish priests). see: (http://www.nazis.testimony.co.uk/7-a.htm)

Thus, almost the same number of Christians were killed by the Nazis, as the six million holocaust Jews who were killed by them, and we seldom heard of anything other than the Jewish atrocities. Although Hitler kept the world focused on the Jews, he had no hesitancy about killing anyone who got in his way of exterminating the Jews or of taking over the world - German, Christian or any others.

Same with the Muslim terrorists. They focus the world on the US, but kill all in the way -- their own people or the Spanish, French or anyone else. The point here is that just like the peaceful Germans were of no protection to anyone from the Nazis, no matter how many peaceful Muslims there may be, they are no protection for us from the terrorist Muslim leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing -- by their own pronouncements -- killing all of us "infidels." I don't blame the peaceful Muslims. What would you do if the choice was shut up or die? ---The US attitude toward Muslim nations is much the same--change your government to one that suits me or I'll carpet bomb your country.

6. So who are we at war with?

There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the Muslim terrorists. Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting. So with that background, now to the two major questions:

1. Can we lose this war?

2. What does losing really mean?

If we are to win, we must clearly answer these two pivotal questions:

We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to the second question - What does losing mean?

It would appear that a great many of us think that losing the war means hanging our heads, bringing the troops home and going on about our business, like post Vietnam. This is as far from the truth as one can get.

What losing really means is:

We would no longer be the premier country in the world. The attacks will not subside, but rather will steadily increase. Remember, they want us dead, not just quiet. If they had just wanted us quiet, they would not have produced an increasing series of attacks against us, over the past 18 years. The plan was clearly, for terrorist to attack us, until we were neutered and submissive to them.

We would of course have no future support from other nations, for fear of reprisals and for the reason that they would see, we are impotent and cannot help them.

They will pick off the other non-Muslim nations, one at a time. --- So once they "conquer us, they will pick off others? Sounds like they are starting with us if you even believe this junk. Compare to the part where he says we are the last bastion of defense! So, are we the first to fall, or the last? It will be increasingly easier for them. They already hold Spain hostage. (???) It doesn't matter whether it was right or wrong for Spain to withdraw its troops from Iraq. Spain did it because the Muslim terrorists bombed their train and told them to withdraw the troops. Really? There is no other explanation? Anything else they want Spain to do will be done. Spain is finished.

The next will probably be France. Our one hope on France is that they might see the light and realize that if we don't win, they are finished too, in that they can't resist the Muslim terrorists without us. However, it may already be too late for France. France is already 20% Muslim and fading fast! ---Too late for France? Fading fast?? He seems here to equate all Muslims with terrorism. Guess his #5 IS material, after all. He wants you to think he doesn't have a problem with peaceful Muslims, but he does. If he were right in his assumption, then the world would have already "fallen".

If we lose the war, our production, income, exports and way of life will all vanish as we know it. After losing, who would trade or deal with us, if they were threatened by the Muslims. If we can't stop the Muslims, how could anyone else? ---Here again with the all Muslims=terrorists. Unbelievable! This is obviously propaganda and was written to gain support for military action in the Middle East. It lumps Iraq in with the war on terror, it vilifies Muslims, creates fear of Muslims as well as fear of "losing" this very generic, broad war. It also perpetuates the silly notion that they hate us "cause they're jealous." This guy wishes. They hate because of our policies, our support for one nation in the region regardless of how many international laws it disregards or how it spies on us and acts unscrupulously toward us.

The Muslims fully know what is riding on this war, and therefore are completely committed to winning, at any cost. We better know it too and be likewise committed to winning at any cost.

Why do I go on at such lengths about the results of losing? Simple. Until we recognize the costs of losing, we cannot unite and really put 100% of our thoughts and efforts into winning. And it is going to take that 100% effort to win.

So, how can we lose the war?

Again, the answer is simple. We can lose the war by "imploding." That is, defeating ourselves by refusing to recognize the enemy and their purpose, and really digging in and lending full support to the war effort If we are united, there is no way that we can lose. If we continue to be divided, there is no way that we can win!

[Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself cannot stand - Jesus, Matthew 12:25]~ inserted by B.L.~

---I hate when scripture is invoked in worldly battle cries and support for war.

Let me give you a few examples of how we simply don't comprehend the life and death seriousness of this situation.

President Bush selects Norman Mineta as Secretary of Transportation. Although all of the terrorist attacks were committed by Muslim men between 17 and 40 years of age, Secretary Mineta refuses to allow profiling. Does that sound like we are taking this thing seriously? This is war! For the duration, we are going to have to give up some of the civil rights we have become accustomed to. We had better be prepared to lose some of our civil rights temporarily or we will most certainly lose all of them permanently. ---Some will have to give up more than others, for sure. He is obviously not in the group that will have to sacrifice the most, so you bet he is all for giving up rights. He is not being looked at and prejudged as though he single handedly brought down the World Trade Center.

And don't worry that it is a slippery slope. We gave up plenty of civil rights during WWII, and immediately restored them after the victory and in fact added many more since then.
---Give up our rights?? Are you kidding? The war on terrorism is so broad that it will never be over. Declaring war on drugs and terrorism is asking for a continual state of war. So those willing to give up rights for the "war" are doing so indefinitely. "They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety." -Benjamin Franklin

Do I blame President Bush or President Clinton before him?

No, I blame us for blithely assuming we can maintain all of our Political Correctness, and all of our civil rights during this conflict and have a clean, lawful, honorable war. None of those words apply to war. Get them out of your head.
---This guy is not a big fan of justice. He criticizes, rightly, those who behead and don't allow freedom of speech, etc, BUT he also ridicules our government and those who supported justice for the soldiers who terrorized Iraqis. He wants us to adopt the practices of those people he looks upon with hatred and disgust. If we do get "these things out of our heads", where will we be? We will be terrorists. We are really riding the fence on that one as we speak. The only difference is, we sometimes appear to censure or discipline ourselves. I hope it is truly to seek justice, but sometimes I fear it is only to look like we are seeking justice.

Some have gone so far in their criticism of the war and/or the Administration that it seems they would literally like to see us lose. I hasten to add that this isn't because they are disloyal. It is because they just don't recognize what losing means. Nevertheless, that conduct gives the impression to the enemy that we are divided and weakening. It concerns our friends, and it does great damage to our cause.
---Oh at least this guy isn't calling those who disagree unpatriotic...uuh...instead he calls them ignorant. Much better! (note sarcasm) Though he stops short of calling dissenters disloyal, he goes right on to say that they help the enemy, concern our friends and generally harm "our cause". Isn't that disloyalty essentially? He doesn't want to call names, but he goes on to do just that.

Of more recent vintage, the uproar fueled by the politicians and media regarding the treatment of some prisoners of war, perhaps exemplifies best what I am saying. We have recently had an issue, involving the treatment of a few Muslim prisoners of war, by a small group of our military police. These are the type prisoners who just a few months ago were throwing their own people off buildings, cutting off their hands, cutting out their tongues and otherwise murdering their own people just for disagreeing with Saddam Hussein.

And just a few years ago these same type prisoners chemically killed 400,000 of their own people for the same reason. They are also the same type of enemy fighters, who recently were burning Americans, and dragging their charred corpses through the streets of Iraq.

And still more recently, the same type of enemy that was and is providing videos to all news sources internationally, of the beheading of American prisoners they held.

Compare this with some of our press and politicians, who for several days have thought and talked about nothing else but the "humiliating" of some Muslim prisoners --not burning them, not dragging their charred corpses through the streets, not beheading them, but "humiliating" them. ---That was the PC term; the correct term is torture.

Can this be for real? ---I have been asking this of your email!!

The politicians and pundits have even talked of impeachment of the Secretary of Defense. If this doesn't show the complete lack of comprehension and understanding of the seriousness of the enemy we are fighting, the life and death struggle we are in and the disastrous results of losing this war, nothing can.

To bring our country to a virtual political standstill over this prisoner issue makes us look like Nero playing his fiddle as Rome burned -- totally oblivious to what is going on in the real world. Neither we, nor any other country, can survive this internal strife. Again I say, this does not mean that some of our politicians or media people are disloyal. It simply means that they are absolutely oblivious to the magnitude, of the situation we are in and into which the Muslim terrorists have been pushing us, for many years.

Remember, the Muslim terrorists stated goal is to kill all infidels! That translates into ALL non-Muslims -- not just in the United States, but throughout the world.

We are the last bastion of defense. ---Whaaat?? That is not supported by facts and isn't even supported by this person's rant.

We have been criticized for many years as being 'arrogant.' That charge is valid in at least one respect. We are arrogant in that we believe that we are so good, powerful and smart, that we can win the hearts and minds of all those who attack us, and that with both hands tied behind our back, we can defeat anything bad in the world!

We can't!

If we don't recognize this, our nation as we know it will not survive, and no other free country in the world will survive if we are defeated.

And finally, name any Muslim country throughout the world that allows freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, equal rights for anyone -- let alone everyone, equal status or any status for women, or that have been productive in one single way that contributes to the good of the world. ---This guy must hate Muslims. Wait. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he is afraid of the unknown. He doesn't know any Muslims, what they believe or who they are. His history's a bit flawed, too.

This has been a long way of saying that we must be united on this war or we will be equated in the history books to the self-inflicted fall of the Roman Empire - If, that is, the Muslim leaders will allow history books to be written or read. ---Anyone who doesn't hate Muslims, who isn't for invading Iraq, who isn't for torturing prisoners and ethnic profiling is for America's downfall. Message received. And another dig at Muslims. Wonderful.

If we don't win this war right now, keep a close eye on how the Muslims take over France in the next 5 years or less. They will continue to increase the Muslim population of France and continue to encroach little by little, on the established French traditions. The French will be fighting among themselves, over what should or should not be done, which will continue to weaken them and keep them from any united resolve. Doesn't that sound eerily familiar?

Democracies don't have their freedoms taken away from them by some external military force. Instead, they give their freedoms away, politically correct piece by politically correct piece.

And they are giving those freedoms away to those who have shown, worldwide that they abhor freedom and will not apply it to you or even to themselves, once they are in power.

They have universally shown that when they have taken over, they then start brutally killing each other over who will be the few who control the masses.

Will we ever stop hearing from the politically correct, about the "peaceful Muslims"?
---Let's hope not, because the vast majority of them are peaceful!

I close on a hopeful note, by repeating what I said above. If we are united, there is no way that we can lose. I hope now after the election, the factions in our country will begin to focus on the critical situation we are in, and will unite to save our country. It is your future we are talking about! Do whatever you can to preserve it.

After reading the above, we all must do this not only for ourselves, but our children, our grandchildren, our country and the world.

Whether Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal and that include the Politicians and media of our country and the free world!

Please forward this to any you feel may want, or NEED to read it. Our "leaders" in Congress ought to read it, too. There are those that find fault with our country, but it is obvious to anyone who truly thinks through this, that we must UNITE!

If you would like to see who this fellow is go to this Air Force web site and look him up. ---Too bad he didn't write it!

And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your Redemption draweth nigh!_Luke 21:28

---Really. This was probably added by a forwarder, but scripture just shouldn't be used in this way at all!

This thing conjures images of Iraq, yet that invasion had nothing to do with the war on terrorism. Hussein wasn't an imminent threat (previous reason for going to war) and he wasn't doing what Bush & Co charged him with. Maybe we can't fault Bush on that one since he fell for Israel's faulty (either by accident or by design) intelligence...again.

This garbage made its rounds before. I was trying to put my finger on it. I think I got it around 2002 or 2003 either surrounding Afghanistan or Iraq. It is making its rounds again no doubt because of the thwarted plane hijackings that recently made the news. Sounds like it could have originated or made another trip around the prisoner abuse scandal or extraordinary rendition discoveries.

Ok. This one is from the admin of a Christian mailing list I was on. It was a good list, though a bit conservative at times. Not to say conservative is bad; I mean it was more conservative than the situation or scripture warranted at times. This is the one I described as getting between 2002-2004 in my post about a forward with similar content (see Lame terrorism email forward).

Interesting how the individual admits to having limited exposure to Islam, yet says he agrees (wholeheartedly!) with the letter!! That makes no sense. Why believe what a random email forward has to say about a religion rather than asking someone who practices it?

Subject: The World Situation email forward AKA WHAT WE ALL NEED TO BE AWARE OF...

DRL NOTE2: Today someone sent to me one of the most interesting and challenging articles I have read in quite some time regarding current events. I read it carefully and I truly believe that it is deserving of a very wide circulation. I have had some quite limited exposure to Islam in my 2 visits to India and 5 to Indonesia. I tend to agree wholeheartedly with the conclusions of this article. I do not know the writer's name--it was not included in the Email I received. I thought so much of the article that I re-formated to make it easier to read than the version I read and have uploaded it to my website. It is a rather lengthy article, but I believe it is well worth your time to read. It is in the form of a letter from a father to his sons. I would encourage as many of you as feel so inclined to distribute the URL far and wide. You may find it at: http://www.hcis.net/users/dlemmons/TheWorldSituation.htm

THE WORLD SITUATION * A LETTER TO MY SONS
This was written by a retired attorney, to his sons, May 19, 2004.
Dear Tom, Kevin, Kirby and Ted,
As your father, I believe I owe it to you to share some thoughts on the present world situation. We have over the years discussed a lot of important things, like going to college, jobs and so forth. But this really takes precedence over any of those discussions. I hope this might give you a longer term perspective that fewer and fewer of my generation are left to speak to.
To be sure you understand that this is not politically flavored, I will tell you that since Franklin D. Roosevelt, who led us through pre and WWII (1933 - 1945) up to and including our present President, I have without exception, supported our presidents on all matters of international conflict. This would include just naming a few in addition to President Roosevelt - WWII: President Truman - Korean War 1950; President Kennedy - Bay of Pigs (1961); President Kennedy Vietnam (1961); [1] eight presidents (5 Republican & 4 Democrat) during the cold war (1945 - 1991); President Clinton's strikes on Bosnia (1995) and on Iraq (1998). [2]
So be sure you read this as completely non-political or otherwise you will miss the point.
Our country is now facing the most serious threat to its existence, as we know it, that we have faced in your lifetime and mine (which includes WWII). The deadly seriousness is greatly compounded by the fact that there are very few of us who think we can possibly lose this war and even fewer who realize what losing really means.
First, let's examine a few basics: 1. When did the threat to us start?
Many will say September 11th, 2001. The answer as far as the United States is concerned is 1979, 22 years prior to September 2001, with the following attacks on us: Iran Embassy Hostages, 1979; Beirut, Lebanon Embassy 1983; Beirut, Lebanon Marine Barracks 1983; Lockerbie, Scotland Pan-Am flight to New York 1988; First New York World Trade Center attack 1993; Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Khobar Towers Military complex 1996; Nairobi, Kenya US Embassy 1998; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania US Embassy 1998; Aden, Yemen USS Cole 2000; New York World Trade Center 2001; Pentagon 2001.
(Note that during the period from 1981 to 2001 there were 7,581 terrorist attacks worldwide).
2. Why were we attacked?
Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks happened during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush 2.
3. We can not fault either the Republicans or Democrats as there were no provocations by any of the presidents or their immediate predecessors, Presidents Ford or Carter.
4. Who were the attackers?
In each case of attacks on US they were Muslims.
5. What is the Muslim population of the World?
25%
6.. Isn't the Muslim Religion peaceful?
Hopefully, but that is really not material. ( http://www.nazis.testimony.co.uk/7-a.htm ). Thus, almost the same number of Christians were killed by the Nazis, as the 6 million holocaust Jews who were killed by them, and we seldom heard of anything other than the Jewish atrocities. Although Hitler kept the world focused on the Jews, he had no hesitancy about killing anyone who got in his way of exterminating the Jews or of taking over the world - German, Christian or any others. Same with the Muslim terrorists. They focus the world on the US, but kill all in the way - their own people or the Spanish, French or anyone else.. [5] The point here is that just like the peaceful Germans were of no protection to anyone from the Nazis, no matter how many peaceful Muslims there may be, they are no protection for us from the terrorist Muslim leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing - by their own pronouncements - killing all of us infidels. I don't blame the peaceful Muslims. What would you do if the choice was shut up or die?
6. So who are we at war with?
There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other
than the Muslim terrorists. Trying to be politically correct and avoid
verbalizing this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win
if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting.
So with that background, now to the two major questions:
1. Can we lose this war?

2. What does losing really mean?

If we are to win, we must clearly answer these two pivotal questions. We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to the second question - 'What does losing mean?'. My Response to World Situation (now that I read it again, it wasn't the best response, so please forgive!)

The biggest threat to us is not Islam, but ourselves, our submission to temptation. In the end, will it matter whether we are killed in a terror attack or by natural causes? Whether we are free or under an Islamic extremist's power or Communist regime are we not still commanded to remain faithful to the end? The way I see it emailing everyone and telling them that a certain group who needs our prayers and who needs to be introduced to the Word wants nothing but to kill them creates a climate of fear, not the urgency to convert Muslim radicals and other Muslims. Should we not be emailing to pray for these people (our perceived "enemies"?) and their conversion rather than telling people they want to kill us?

2. Why were we attacked?
Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks happened during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush 2.
***
Maybe there are some in the Middle East who are jealous of the West, but I guarantee that the Muslim radicals/fanatics who are planning attacks are not. They make the rules, so they have whatever freedoms they want, but unfortunately the people they rule in many cases do not share their opinion and so cannot consider themselves free.

The reason extremists attack the West is because of our foreign policies. We support Israel ($3billion/yr+) even though they flout international laws, violate human rights continually, and still try and hide/deny their massive nuclear arsenal (oops, I mean textile factory ;) ). Not to mention they kept intelligence from us (at a time when we were "sharing" with them) in 1982 that could have prevented the Beruit attack on the marine base and many such incidents. Their current prime minister, Sharon (then Defense Minister), was found responsible for the 1982 Beruit massacres in Sabra and Shatila and found unfit for public office, yet our government considers him a man of peace. Israelis are living on Palestinian land in violation of the Geneva Convention (no portion of the Occupier's population is supposed to be moved to the Territory it occupies) and has killed three times as many Palestinians as Palestinians have Israelis, yet the US only regurlarly criticizes and blames Palestinians. Israel tortures detainees (not yet charged with any crime) during interogations to the point that they cannot have children again or they need a limb amputated, but the US gives it's money to support this right to "self-defense".
*Crime= could be anything from planning to kill Israelis to flying a Palestinian flag or writing slogans against occupation or being accused of being a member of an illegal Palestinian political party (doesn't matter if they really are or not; what Israel says is how it is, period)
We will bomb and Arab country in a heartbeat (or on 20 year old "evidence"), but we refuse to sanction or even say a mean word against Israel (instead, Congress passes a resolution saying how much we agree with them) even when they are in fact in the wrong.

Hatred of the double standard and some of our policies is the single thing that unites the moderates and radicals, it isn't Islam, though radicals try and intimidate by saying this. If we had just policies, we could pit the moderates against the extremists.

And I won't even get into our forays into Central America and the School of the Americas....
